I am looking to purchase a camcorder for our high school. I want one that records to a hard drive and doesn't use tapes. Wondering if schools have one they really like and would recommend or ones I should avoid? I don't want one of the flip video recorders, was looking at the Sony Handycam DCR SR47.

We have several Sony's. They work great except you have to use their utility to download the video. Which means when students use it they have to come back to the media center to download the video to their folder. I've heard some brands don't require this...

I'm a fan of Canons, myself. I just looked at the Canon Vixia HG21 as a replacement for the older panasonic our basketball team uses. I liked it because of the extra large hard drive (120gb in a camera? Thats more than most of my labs..), as well as the capability to shoot either 1080p, or downgrade to lower res. as needed. Price wasnt to bad either, at 699. However, it does use Canon's software for importing, so its the same issue Brian mentioned with the sonys.
